Majority of voters support Israel in latest Gaza conflict: Poll

A new poll reveals a majority of American voters support Israel in its latest conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Israel enjoys the support of 59% of voters amid the recent tensions in Gaza, while only 24% say they side with the Palestinians, according to the Fox News Poll. The poll also found that 56% of people support sending Israel financial aid during the conflict compared to 38% who don’t, while 51% support sending weapons to Israel compared to 44% who don’t.

The poll comes as far-left politicians such as Sen. Bernie Sanders have questioned sending military aid to Israel, with Sanders introducing legislation aimed at blocking further arms shipments from the United States to the Jewish state.

“At a moment when U.S.-made bombs are devastating Gaza and killing women and children, we cannot simply let another huge arms sale go through without even a congressional debate,” Sanders said, but he later backtracked on the effort. “I believe that the United States must help lead the way to a peaceful and prosperous future for both Israelis and Palestinians. We need to take a hard look at whether the sale of these weapons is actually helping do that or whether it is simply fueling conflict.”

RETURN TO BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL

While Republicans are more likely to support giving financial aid than Democrats, 71% to 47%, and selling weapons to Israel, 67% to 42%, the poll found that more Democrats, 42%, sympathize with Israel than Palestinians, 35%. President Joe Biden has so far remained committed to providing support for Israel.

Hamas and Israel negotiated a ceasefire to the conflict that has been in place since May 21.

Biden’s handling of foreign policy so far has become increasingly unpopular, with 52% saying they disapprove compared to 43% indicating approval. Those numbers are down from last month for Biden, who had the approval of 42% of voters on foreign policy compared to 41% who said they disapprove.

But Biden does receive better marks for his overall job performance, enjoying the approval of 54% of voters compared to 42% who say they disapprove.

The poll, which was conducted between May 22-25, sampled 1,003 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
