A 23-year-old man is suing the Los Angeles Police Department, including his uncle on the force, over an incident during a May 2020 rally in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Asim Jamal Shakir Jr. claimed in a lawsuit filed on Monday that his uncle ordered other officers to fire hard-foam projectiles at him, which led him to get a series of medical, psychological, and psychiatric treatments. The lawsuit claims that law enforcement violated Shakir’s civil rights by using unreasonable force and not adhering to proper training procedures.
“There isn’t a paycheck in the world that should be worth your morals and values and family,” Shakir said Tuesday, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
In a livestream recording on his Instagram, Shakir can be heard calling his uncle’s name and yelling questions at a group of officers who were walking toward him. Once he recognized his uncle, he can be heard in the video yelling, “Eric!”

“Our ancestors are turning over in their grave right now, Eric!” Shakir said. “Look at me in my eyes, Eric. … You know how your daddy feeling right now? That could have been you.”
A shot can then be heard, with the phone falling before the restarted video a few seconds later shows Shakir’s bloody hand.
“This case alarmed me and touched me like no other in my 42 years because never have I ever heard of an officer knowing the subject of his abuse — let alone them drawing from the same bloodline,” said Carl Douglas, Shakir’s lawyer.
Shakir is seeking unspecified damages and coverage of his medical costs.
