The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. when Ashanti and her 11-year-old brother drove with their parents to a local grocery store in southwest Houston, according to a report.

The four were on the freeway when they were caught between two vehicles that were racing, the report noted.

A driver in one of the racing vehicles, a white GMC Denali, persistently cut off the Grant family vehicle before getting behind and firing multiple shots, police said.

Ashanti was hit in the head.

“You’re just numb. You cry so much. There’s no more tears next,” Elaine Williams, Ashanti’s grandmother, said. “She’s the sweetest little angel.”

“There’s nothing you can do but just pray and ask everybody else to pray for her.”

The residents of the Brazoria County neighborhood, where the young girl lives and goes to school, are striving to answer Williams’s request.

“It gets me kind of teared up because it makes me think about my own children,” Stephon Davis said. “I’m just totally speechless. When I heard about it, my heart sank. So, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

“I have a son that goes to Lakes of Savannah, and I do a lot of traveling around Houston. It’s scary. I just hope all these angry people stop all this foolishness,” another man said.

No other member of Ashanti’s family was wounded, and her parents remain at her bedside in the hospital.

“This guy is still on the streets somewhere. He knows what he did,” Williams said. “Somebody pick up the phone, even if you’re related to them. You have to think about this kid, and how we feel that she’s in the hospital fighting for her life. A bullet went in her head.”
