All entrances will be closed to inbound visitor traffic through Wednesday “at a minimum,” and portions of the northern section of the park are being evacuated due to multiple road and bridge failures, mudslides, and power outages, the National Park Service said Monday.

“Due to record flooding events in the park and more precipitation in the forecast, we have made the decision to close Yellowstone to all inbound visitation,” the park’s superintendent, Cam Sholly, said. “We will not know timing of the park’s reopening until flood waters subside and we’re able to assess the damage throughout the park. It is likely that the northern loop will be closed for a substantial amount of time.”
Preliminary assessments by the park service show multiple portions of roadways completely washed out or covered in mud, with additional roads on the verge of being flooded.

Yellowstone River water levels in the Corwin Springs area have risen by nearly 6 feet in the past 24 hours, with additional rainfall forecast in the coming days, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Montana.

Visitors planning to come to Yellowstone in the coming weeks are advised to pay attention to road closures, as “many park roads may remain closed for an extended period of time,” according to the park service.
