One person is dead and eight others injured after a shooting in New York City on Monday.

The shooting occurred at around 12:40 a.m. on a footpath underneath the Madison Avenue Bridge in Harlem, near the intersection of East 139th Street and 5th Avenue, according to the New York City Police Department. Seven men and two women were transported to area hospitals with gunshot wounds, according to police. One of the shooting victims, a 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The emboldened individuals responsible for this are exactly who our officers are battling every day to make our city safe. And while we are making some headway against violence, we have a lot of work to do, but we need help alongside the entire criminal justice system,” New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a press conference on Monday.

Authorities say the group of people targeted gathered on Father’s Day and may have been attending a barbecue.

The NYPD posted a photograph of a handgun recovered by police at the scene of the shooting and asked anyone with information about the incident to contact police.
