Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has been asked to participate virtually in the Monday debate due to his unwillingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I told them I would not do that,” Andrew Giuliani said, according to the Associated Press. “I don’t think that’s something that even someone who has chosen to get the shot should have to do, from a constitutional standpoint.” Despite his resistance, Giuliani agreed to appear at the debate virtually.

There is a vaccination requirement because the facility hosting the debate requires visitors to be vaccinated.

“Any candidate who doesn’t meet this requirement is encouraged to participate in Monday’s debate remotely,” according to a CBS-TV spokesperson.

Giuliani will have to face off with New York Rep. Lee Zeldin, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, and former Obama administration official Harry Wilson in the June 28 primary.

Like his father, Andrew Giuliani has been a supporter of former President Donald Trump and has been critical of New York’s strict COVID-19 measures. He tested positive for COVID-19 in November 2020.

Rudy has tag-teamed to assist his son in his election bid. Andrew has also had remarkable success getting the attention of the state’s voters. He led in a GOP gubernatorial primary poll in late May, causing some to suspect he may be the primary GOP candidate to take on Gov. Kathy Hochul in November.
