White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre sidestepped questions on what penalties China might face if President Joe Biden’s newly announced investigation into the origin of the coronavirus finds wrongdoing in that country.
Just before Wednesday’s White House briefing began, Biden announced that he had tasked the U.S. intelligence community with conducting a 90-day review to determine “whether it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or from a laboratory accident.”

The Associated Press’s Zeke Miller asked Jean-Pierre what types of penalties China could face if the review determines it was somehow complicit in allowing the global pandemic to spread and whether the White House would commit to publicizing the findings of the investigation, yet the White House spokeswoman did not answer either inquiry.
She stressed that the administration wanted to allow the 90-day review to run its course before considering future actions.
“We have to go through the 90-day review,” she reiterated. “I’m just not going to prejudge. I’m not going to make a statement until we know what happens on this 90-day review.”
