The Russian military resumed its attacks against the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv over the weekend.
Despite nearly all of the fighting occurring in the eastern part of Ukraine, Russia launched five winged air missiles from the Caspian Sea toward the capital at about 6 a.m. local time on Sunday morning, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Ukraine’s air defense unit destroyed one of the missiles, while the rest hit the Darnytsia carriage repair plant in the northern part of the capital city. The military said there were “no victims” and that some localized fires had broken out.
WHERE THE WAR IN UKRAINE STANDS AFTER 100 DAYS AND WHAT’S NEXT
“I officially declare that there is no military equipment on the plant’s territory. This plant repaired cargo carriages, including those we use for grain export,” Oleksandr Kamyshin, CEO of the Ukrainian state railroad enterprise Ukrzaliznytsia, said, according to CNN.
“Their real target is the economy of Ukraine and the civilian population,” he added. “They also want to block our opportunity to export Ukrainian products to the West.”
The missile launches toward Kyiv were likely designed as an attempt to slow the supply of Western military equipment to the front lines, the U.K. Ministry of Defense said in a Monday update on the war. The United States, United Kingdom, and a slew of other countries have provided Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of weapons, and they hope Ukraine can withstand Russia’s brutal military campaign without getting drawn into the war themselves.
In the east, heavy fighting continued in the contested town of Sievierodonetsk, which is in the Donbas region, where fighting between Russia and Ukraine has been happening since 2014. The Ukrainians were able to launch some counterattacks over the weekend successfully.
“Even as Russian forces continue to pour equipment and troops into the Sievierodonetsk-Lysychansk area, Ukrainian forces have conducted a successful counterattack in Sievierodonetsk in the last 48 hours and pushed Russian troops back to the eastern outskirts of the city and out of southern settlements,” the Institute for the Study of War said in its latest update. “The ability of Ukrainian forces to successfully counterattack in Sievierodonetsk, the Kremlin’s current priority area of operations, further indicates the declining combat power of Russian forces in Ukraine.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the troops in the contested southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday.

“Many people come from settlements that are temporarily occupied by the enemy. We need to focus on solving their problems, providing them with housing. It is also necessary to take care of the employment of these people. I am sure that there are qualified specialists among them,” Zelensky said.
