You’re forgiven if you are unfamiliar with the story, as those on the Left and the legacy media have largely ignored it. These are the same people bemoaning the threat of physical violence and domestic terrorism, especially during the “show trials” over Jan. 6. Yet that hand-wringing seems to apply only to those who embrace right-wing political thought. Once again, the legacy media, liberal Democrats, and most other left-wing politicians showed there is a double standard regarding political violence.
However, what if the assassination plot had been against Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson instead of Justice Kavanaugh? Well, in that scenario, the reaction would have been quite different. Cries of “racism” and “white supremacy” would have echoed throughout the country. It would have dominated the news cycle. Every pundit and politician would have lamented radical, racist right-wingers.
There would have been baseless and unsubstantiated allegations against former President Donald Trump and his “MAGA” supporters. President Joe Biden would have headed over to his studio White House office and passionately read off his teleprompter about the horrors of the “Ultra-MAGA” crowd. Every Democratic politician would have (rightfully) condemned the assassination plot.
In other words, they would have done the exact opposite of what they did with Justice Kavanaugh.
But doesn’t Brett Kavanaugh’s life matter? No one should be threatening a Supreme Court justice’s life, regardless of how anyone feels about their political ideology. Fortunately, suspect Nicholas John Roske could not successfully implement his plan. However, his attempt indicates the toxic effects of contemporary left-wing politics.
And there are right-wing extremists as well; no one denies that. However, the difference is: When there is a right-wing extremist with nefarious intentions, that story receives the utmost scrutiny and infinite media attention. Such stories tend to get ignored and swept under the rug when they involve a radicalized left-winger.
Fortunately, some people have noticed this double standard and called it out. Of all the Sunday political television shows, only Fox News Sunday covered the assassination plot. It was ignored by every program on ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC.
Real Time host Bill Maher criticized the New York Times for burying the plot against Kavanaugh.
“The New York Times buried this,” Maher said. “If this had been a liberal Supreme Court Justice that someone came to kill, it would have been on the front page. And that’s what’s so disappointing about a paper like the New York Times. Because they just wear their bias on their sleeves.”
And Maher is absolutely correct.
Right-wing or left-wing, all political violence is terrible. All radicalized extremism is bad. There is no monopoly on which extremists are worse. It is outright despicable to allow political bias to mask such a severe problem. It’s the latest example of why the country has little faith in the left-wing news media.
It’s also indicative of how the Left prioritizes power and political agenda over morality.
