Biden taps Rahm Emanuel as potential ambassador to Japan: Report

President Joe Biden reportedly tapped former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to be the U.S. ambassador to Japan, prompting the Democrat’s potential return to Washington, D.C.

It’s unclear whether Biden will publicly announce his first picks for ambassadors, according to eight sources familiar with personnel discussions, Financial Times reported.

Emanuel, who served as former President Barack Obama‘s White House chief of staff and a senior adviser in the Clinton administration, would have to be confirmed by the Senate for the role if he is selected.

He was previously floated as a contender to be Biden’s Transportation Secretary, a role that ultimately went to former presidential candidate and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. He is a former U.S. congressman for Illinois.
