Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a video on Tuesday showing the deadly missile strike on a shopping mall in central Ukraine.
The video was aired during the president’s nightly address on Tuesday, and it shows a large missile striking a structure obscured by trees and a subsequent explosion. Ukrainian officials say at least 20 people were killed in the airstrike in Kremenchuk on Monday and 59 were hospitalized. Twenty-one people are still reported missing, and an adviser to Zelensky said there is no hope of finding any survivors in the rubble. Russia denied that it targeted the mall on Tuesday.
“Today, I want to end this address with one such piece of evidence — so that no one dares to deceive about the missile strike at the shopping mall in Kremenchuk. The Russian missile hit this very object, purposefully. Obviously, that was the order. It is obvious that Russian assassins received such coordinates for this missile. They wanted to kill as many people as possible in a peaceful city, in a regular shopping mall. Here is what happened in Kremenchuk,” Zelensky said before the video recording was played.

The video was also shared on social media by Zelensky’s adviser Mykhailo Podolyak, who said in a tweet, “Russian propaganda always lies: there is no coincidence, it is a deliberate deliberate blow to intimidate the population and mass victims.”

The Russian Defense Ministry rejected Ukraine’s account of the missile strike on Tuesday, claiming that the shopping mall was not in use and that the missile struck a nearby depot of U.S. and European arms, triggering an explosion that ignited a fire in the mall.
“In Kremenchuk, Russian forces struck a weapons depot storing arms received from the United States and Europe with high-precision air-based weapons,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement, according to Reuters.
“The detonation of stored ammunition for Western weapons caused a fire in a non-functioning shopping centre located next to the depot,” it added.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky said on Tuesday that a Soviet long-range X-22 missile carrying nearly 2,000 pounds of explosives was used in the attack.
He added that rescue workers are continuing to find fragments of bodies at the site, that most of the bodies recovered have not been identified yet due to their severe burns, and that DNA tests will be needed to establish their identities.

Monastyrsky said that Ukrainian law enforcement has identified the names of the pilots who carried out the attack.
Ukraine’s prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova said the attack will be investigated and possibly referred to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
