A federal law enforcement officer in Miami has died after being shot while conducting an exercise as an instructor at a gun range, federal officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced during a press conference Wednesday afternoon that an unnamed officer from its Office of Field Operations was fatally shot earlier in the day during a training practice at a gun range in South Florida. The officer was based at the range as a trainer.

“A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer working at the weapons range was critically injured while on duty and pronounced deceased earlier today. CBP is cooperating with the investigation,” CBP said in a statement provided to media.

The shooting took place at the Trail Glades Shooting Range, approximately 15 miles west of downtown Miami.
