New York Mayor Eric Adams held a historic event on Tuesday. As he gently waved a checkered flag in the air, a whopping 92 “destructive” dirt bikes were mauled by a bulldozer.
These illegal bikes have been terrorizing the city for long enough, he declared, and it’s well past time for the menacing machinery to be eradicated for good.
He has a point. New York can’t seem to get a handle on its many problems, not the least of which is the soaring crime rate. So it only makes sense for New York’s leaders to focus on illegal dirt bikes, inanimate objects that can simply be purchased elsewhere, depending on the riders’ commitment. Isn’t it comforting to know that politicians are addressing the important issues at hand? They’re even recycling the metal! Simultaneously saving the environment and cracking down on crime — that’s true leadership.
Indeed, the New York Police Department has confiscated more than 3,000 illegal all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes over the past year alone. This is not necessarily because they are dangerous, per se, but because they “have been acknowledged as a nuisance by City Hall, the NYPD, and ordinary New Yorkers,” Fox News reports.
At least Adams is committed to solving this matter once and for all.
“Today, as we stand in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, we are freeing ourselves from these destructive piece[s] of machinery that’s on our streets,” he said. “They will be crushed today so they can never terrorize our city again, each and every one of them. They will be turned into scrap metal and eventually recycled.”
“And I’m not going to give up on my promise and commitments to rid our streets of these bikes and make all of our boroughs a place where people can move about,” the mayor said. “As you can see from the number of bikes here today, we are making good on our promise.”
Ninety-two dirt bikes down. Only a few several-thousand more to go.
