Texas Democrats have approved recount requests from Jessica Cisneros and Ruben Ramirez in a pair of key congressional races.
A recount is expected to begin next Wednesday for Texas’s 15th Congressional District, which saw Ramirez finish just 30 votes behind his opponent, Michelle Vallejo, who has already declared victory in the South Texas race. Thursday will mark the recount start for Texas’s 28th Congressional District, where Cisneros is 281 votes behind Rep. Henry Cuellar in the Democratic primary runoff.
“The Texas Democratic Party is the Recount Coordinator for both of these recounts and is supporting all of our County Chairs in these two districts, who will work closely with their election officials to carry out thorough, accurate recounts of the votes,” a spokesperson with the state’s Democratic Party told the Washington Examiner.
TEXAS DEMOCRATIC HOUSE RUNOFF IN RIO GRANDE VALLEY IS TOO CLOSE TO CALL
Ramirez requested a manual recount, while Cisneros asked for an electronic recount. Texas candidates are eligible to request a recount so long as their margin is less than 10% of the number of votes received by their opponent.
While much of the national attention in regard to Texas primaries was focused on the too-close-to-call race over the state’s 28th District between Cuellar and Cisneros, the margins in the race for the 15th District came much closer than any other primary that pitted a liberal against a more centrist Democrat.
“Though the race is too close to call, we are heartened by the clear path to victory,” Vallejo said in a statement one day after the May 24 election.
Meanwhile, Cuellar has sought to dismiss the recount request by Cisneros in a June 7 statement.
”Every vote has been counted and our margin not only held, but increased. My opponent has every legal right to call for a recount, though she has previously stated that she ‘won’t stop fighting until every vote has been counted.’ Well, every vote has been counted,” Cuellar said.

Texas recount rules only allow for recounted ballots that have already been counted. “There is no quibbling over whether a voter was eligible or a certain person’s mail ballot should be counted or not at this stage,” the Democratic spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.
It will likely take weeks before the victors are confirmed from the pair of disputed runoff races.
