District Judge Andrew Stone in Salt Lake City granted a temporary restraining order that will be in effect for 14 days after Planned Parenthood of Utah, with the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah, filed a lawsuit on Saturday to block the law from being enforced, as reported by FOX 13.
ROE V . WADE OVERTURNED: SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION
“Abortion services can resume in Utah! A Utah court just blocked the state’s abortion ban, which took effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. While this is a win, it’s only the first step in the long fight ahead,” Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah tweeted.
The groups had argued that the abortion law was unconstitutional and “catastrophic” in their lawsuit. Julie Murray, an attorney representing Planned Parenthood, noted that the group was seeking a temporary restraining order, which was granted Monday, and that a preliminary injunction would be filed at a later point, according to the FOX 13 report.
Utah’s legislature passed the trigger ban in 2020, which prohibits abortions except for limited circumstances, such as if the mother’s life is in danger or in cases of rape or incest. The law took effect on Friday after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Utah was one of 13 states with abortion trigger bans passed ahead of Friday’s ruling. The bans were set to crack down on abortions if Roe was overturned, as it was on Friday.
