Poll: Obama gets credit for improving economy, lowering unemployment

President Obama continues to get credit for the improving economy and lower unemployment rates, a new poll found.

The latest Associated Press-GfK poll found that 51 percent approve of his handling of unemployment, compared with 44 percent in December 2014.

Nearly half of respondents said that the economy was good, while just 41 percent felt that way in December. They also attribute this to Obama. About 45 percent approve of the way he is handling the economy, up from 41 percent over the past two months.

But while Americans see the economy improving overall, they aren’t feeling that way at home.

Just 35 percent of those surveyed said their own family has mostly recovered from the recession and only 27 percent said their local job market was most of the way to recovery. Whereas, 55 percent said big businesses have recovered, and 53 percent say the stock market has bounced back from the downturn.

Getting credit for the economy has likely helped Obama’s overall approval rating, which is now at 47 percent in the Associated Press-GfK poll, up 6 percent from December.

More people also said the country is headed in the right direction in the new survey. About 39 percent of respondents felt positively about the country’s immediate future, up from 33 percent in December.
