D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will meet with Donald Trump in New York on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the mayor said.
The meeting comes at Bowser’s request and will focus on infrastructure, public safety and statehood.
During the campaign, Trump did not offer a definitive position on D.C. statehood but told the Washington Post it was not something he foresaw happening.
“I think it’s a tough thing. I don’t have a position on it yet. I would form a position. But I think statehood is a tough thing for D.C, ” Trump told the post in March. “I don’t see statehood for D.C.”
Bowser was a prominent backer of Democrat Hillary Clinton and has called Trump’s rhetoric on immigration “idiotic.” However, she has taken a more cautious stance than other mayors on the issue of sanctuary cities. Trump has promised to strip cities like New York and San Francisco, that provide a safe haven for illegal immigrants, of federal funding. That kind of punishment would have devasting effects on D.C.’s economy, as nearly a quarter of its budget comes from federal funds.
The pair will meet Tuesday morning at Trump Tower.
