Biden speaks with one former president more than any other — and it isn’t Obama

Despite spending eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden is more regularly in contact with former President Bill Clinton than he is with Obama.

In a Washington Post report, aides shared that while Biden does speak to Obama regularly, he is in closer contact with Clinton, as the two share a similar “outgoing” style.

“Beneath the surface, [Biden and Obama’s relationship] has had very serious ups and downs over time, both personal and especially political,” Gabriel Debenedetti, author of The Long Alliance: The Imperfect Union of Joe Biden and Barack Obama, said in an interview with Time magazine

He said their relationship was professional, as they had known each other in politics for years, and less so a “bromance” as many Obama-Biden fans saw during the Obama administration.

“Their conception of each other has changed dramatically. They’ve known each other for 20 years, and these are two men who come from very different worlds, have very different life experiences and very different experiences in Washington,” Debenedetti said.

There are several senior aides from the Clinton administration currently working in the White House, including Biden’s deputy chief of staff, Bruce Reed, who previously served as a chief domestic policy adviser for Clinton.

“I’ve always thought Biden was much more Clinton than Obama,” a Biden aide told the Hill. “I think that’s why so many of the people Clinton surrounded himself with are also Biden people. And I’m sure in many ways ,Biden’s approach is similar to Clinton’s approach.”
