Police, fire officials warn of falling ice

D.C. firefighters are warning residents to look out for falling ice after a 60-pound chunk hospitalized a man in Northwest Washington Friday.

A man was struck by a 45-square-foot slab that fell outside a business at 14th Street and Rhode Island Avenue, Etter said.

The man was taken to George Washington University Hospital for treatment of a minor head wound.

The sun has loosened huge slabs of ice that accumulated during this week’s storms.

D.C. firefighters used a ladder truck Thursday to break up a 400-pound piece that hung loosely from the seventh floor of a building on F Street Northwest between 13th and 14th streets, said Alan Etter of the D.C. Fire Department.

Law enforcement officials are also reminding drivers to remove ice from their vehicles.

In Loudoun County, ice has flown off several vehicles and crashed through the windshields of trailing motorists.

Several people have been cut by the glass and ice.

The ice also becomes a traffic hazard when it falls in the roadway, authorities said.
