President Joe Biden predicts that if former President Donald Trump loses the 2024 election, he will not accept the results and will “do anything to try to win.”
Trump’s contention of his loss in the 2020 election has continued more than three years after Biden was sworn into office and has led to two criminal indictments for his alleged actions. Biden hit at the former president in an interview with the New Yorker in which he declared that “losers are never graceful.”
“Losers who are losers are never graceful,” Biden said. “I just think that he’ll do anything to try to win. If — and when — I win, I think he’ll contest it. No matter what the result is.”
Trump has seldom acknowledged that he lost the 2020 election to Biden, usually alleging the results were stolen or rigged against him. In Georgia and Washington, D.C., the former president is facing charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
With a CBS News poll in January that showed 51% of adults believe future election losers will accept the results peacefully compared to 49% who believe violence will come after election losses, the country does not appear optimistic for future peaceful transfers of power.
Biden made one of his main pitches that he would defend democracy and questioned how the country could reelect Trump.
“How can we, as a democracy, elect anyone president who says violence is appropriate?” Biden said. “It’s like you’ve all become numbed by it.”

While Biden may argue the rule of law and democracy would not be safe under Trump, adults are more split on the matter. A CBS News poll released on Sunday showed that 34% believe those principles would be safe only if Biden wins, 33% believe those principles would be safe only if Trump wins, and 20% do not believe democracy and the rule of law will be safe either way.
Biden is behind Trump in most national polls, along with various polls conducted in key swing states. While Trump’s rejection of the 2020 election is the most recent example of denying presidential election results, former Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Hillary Clinton disputed their losses in 2000 and 2016, respectively.
