Lara Trump slammed Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo Wednesday for “defaming” the U.S. when he co-opted President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan and claimed the country “was never that great.”
“Today, Andrew Cuomo showed his true, pessimistic colors when he defamed America as a country that was ‘never that great,’” Lara Trump, a senior adviser to President Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and the president’s daughter-in-law, wrote in a statement issued by the campaign.
“Yet, the vast majority of Americans believe in America as the ‘last best hope of earth,'” she continued.
Lara Trump, who is married to the president’s son, Eric Trump, said the administration was leading the nation “on the path to greatness like we’ve never seen before,” despite the detractors.
Cuomo made the comments Wednesday at a bill signing event in New York before having a press secretary try to clarify his remarks.
“We have not reached greatness,” he initially said. “We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.”
Cuomo is vying against “Sex and the City” actress Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic gubernatorial primary set for Sept. 13.
