An Army base in Maryland is operating at a reduced status Thursday morning while local police search for a carjacking suspect believed to be on the base.
Only “mission-essential” personnel are reporting to work at Fort George G. Meade, according to a release put out by the base, which employees more than 50,000 people. All morale and welfare operations, including child development centers, are closed.
“Out of an abundance of caution, and to further aid police in their search, residents are asked to remain indoors. Please continue to check for further updates and report any suspicious activity,” the release said.
Police saw a car Wednesday night that was reported stolen in a robbery or carjacking in Baltimore, according to a statement from Anne Arundel County Police. Police chased the vehicle about 4 miles to Rockenbach Road, where the car crashed into a fence leading onto Fort Meade.
The driver then fled on foot, the police statement said.
“At this time it is believed that the driver may still be in the area on Ft. Meade property,” the statement said. “Ft. Meade Police have assumed responsibility as the primary jurisdiction since the driver is still believed to be on their property.”
