Savage does it again

Retired nurse extends her record run in the WDCGA

For the sixth time in seven years, Alexandria’s Shelley Savage has captured the Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association championship. Savage, a retired nurse and member at Army Navy Country Club, beat co-medalist Mary Carbriele of Country Club of Fairfax, 1 up, in the championship match Thursday at TPC Potomac.

It was the record seventh title for Savage, who won her first WDCGA in 1992. No other player has won it more than four times. The tournament was established in 1929. The only player in the last seven years other than Savage to capture the tournament was Lisa Schlesinger (2008).

The win concluded another week of clutch work from Savage who needed to go at least 16 holes to beat her four match-play opponents. She toppled Arlene Hoffman in the semifinals, 3 and 2.

Savage, the runner-up last month to Mimi Hoffman (Belle Haven) in the Virginia Senior Women’s Amateur, also has won a record four Virginia Senior Women’s Stroke Play titles.
