One week after going viral for delivering the Republican response to the State of the Union address, Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) said the party is “right on the issues” due to the criticism the response generated.
Britt told Sen. Ted Cruz‘s (R-TX) Verdict podcast that despite receiving criticism for how she delivered the rebuttal, she loved giving the speech and isn’t bothered by those primarily on the Left who slammed her on social media.
“It’s an honor to take the arrows, too, because that means that we are right on the issues,” Britt said. “You noticed they are not plummeting me on the issues that I talked about. They’re going after my passion, and I’m going to keep that passion. I’m going to keep fighting for what I know is right and what I believe in. And, Ted, I’ll say to you, it is an honor to fight alongside you.”
Her speech was also lampooned on Saturday Night Live, on which Britt was portrayed by actress Scarlett Johansson. The Alabama senator joked it was “awesome” to be portrayed by Johansson, with Cruz agreeing, joking that “Scarlett Johansson is hot.”
“And I’ll be honest with you, a bingo card of 2024 for Katie Britt, I did not have this on it, right? And so certainly did not have Scarlett Johansson playing me,” she told Cruz. “And I was trying — we were talking to the kids about all of it, and they were like, ‘Oh my gosh, mom, and da da da.’ And I said, you know, ‘Look, it could be worse.’ I mean, Scarlett Johansson, here you have Black Widow. They bring in someone from Avengers to play me in the cold open. I’m here for it!”
Some of the criticism generated from Britt’s rebuttal stems from a story she told about meeting a sex trafficking victim while discussing President Joe Biden’s border policies. Reports have since circulated that Britt’s story did not take place during Biden’s presidency.

Britt has brushed off the criticism, explaining that the sex trafficking victim she met had revealed to her what various cartels are doing and that the story showcases how important it is to secure the southern border.
Among Britt’s critics was podcast host Megyn Kelly, who described the rebuttal as an audition “for a show on Lifetime.” She added that Republicans had the opportunity to sound “normal” to voters but instead “blew it, as they do almost all the time in these State of the Union responses.”
