Three juveniles were shot in Southeast D.C. on Thursday morning.

D.C. police say a weapon has been recovered and a suspect is in custody, though detectives are still investigating whether the three incidents, which happened at about 9:30 a.m. near a cluster of schools in the Congress Heights area, are related.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 600 block of Alabama Avenue SE at about 9:30 a.m., said Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman. A boy was found unconscious and had been shot, Alali said. He said he did not know the boy’s age, but he is believed to be between 15 and 17 years old.

Alali said the boy was alive when officers responded, but homicide investigators were called to the scene.

At about the same time, officers were also called to reported shootings on the 3300 block of Fourth Street SE and the 800 block of Wheeler Hill Drive SE. In the Fourth Street shooting, a boy suffered a gunshot wound to his leg; another boy was shot in his “lower extremities” on Wheeler Hill Drive, Alali said.

Information on their ages and conditions was not available.

A weapon was recovered a short time later on the 600 block of Mississippi Avenue SE and a suspect was stopped for questioning, Alali said.

He said investigators still don’t know whether one person was responsible for all three shootings or whether any of the victims knew their assailant.
