Cats wins ‘Razzie’ for worst picture after box office flop

The star-studded movie adaptation of the musical Cats received the lion’s share of awards at the annual “Razzies,” which hands out prizes for the worst movies.

The movie, which stars Dame Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, and others, was released in theaters on Dec. 20. It was heavily panned critics and received just 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregation website.

Cats notched a total of six wins at the 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards on Monday, which were announced over YouTube because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The box office bomb won awards for worst picture, worst supporting actor and actress for James Corden and Wilson, worst director for Tom Hooper, worst screenplay, and worst screen combo for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairballs.”

Last year’s Razzie winner for worst picture was Holmes and Watson, a comedic take on Sherlock Holmes that starred Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

Idris Elba, who also starred in the film but was not nominated for any Razzies, announced on Monday that he tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. In the United States, there have been 5,204 cases of the coronavirus, 17 recoveries, and 92 deaths, according to the latest reading by the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
