Watch: Emanuel says Chicago ‘will always be a sanctuary city’

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel pledged Monday that his city would always be a haven for illegal immigrants, despite last week’s election of Donald Trump.

“It always will be a sanctuary city,” Emanuel told reporters. “To all those who are, after Tuesday’s election, very nervous… you are safe in Chicago. You are secure in Chicago. And you are supported in Chicago.”

Trump ran successfully on a platform of tough border enforcement, and met several times with the families of people who were killed at the hands of illegal immigrants.

Trump several times mentioned the death of Kate Steinle, who was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant in San Francisco, another so-called sanctuary city. Dozens of cities and municipalities have earned that designation by refusing to cooperate with federal authorities on immigration matters.

Republicans have hinted they are considering wants to block federal funding to sanctuary cities in order to increase pressure on the enforcement of immigration law.
