TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A suspected drug dealer is dead after a SWAT team shot him during the execution of a search warrant at his home in Tampa.
The incident unfolded Tuesday night in Tampa’s Riverbend area.
According to Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy, 29-year-old Jason Joseph Westcott had been under investigation for months, with undercover officers making multiple marijuana purchases at the home.
She says that during each transaction, Westcott was armed with a handgun.
On Tuesday night, a man who answered the door didn’t resist. As the SWAT team went toward a bedroom, the door opened and Westcott was pointing a handgun at them. Two officers fired at least twice.
Westcott was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The officers are on administrative leave until an investigation is completed.
