Boston Globe endorses liberal candidate Ayanna Pressley over Rep. Mike Capuano

The Boston Globe on Sunday endorsed liberal candidate and city Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley, who is running to unseat Democrat Rep. Mike Capuano in the upcoming midterm elections.

The paper praised Pressley’s “deep commitment to justice and equality” and “talent for perceiving concrete opportunities to make things better,” citing her work to change the liquor license process in the city.

Pressley, the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council, also has the backing of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York socialist candidate who made political shock waves earlier this year when she beat House Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley in a primary.

The outcome turned attention onto the divisions within the Democratic Party between liberals and more centrist-minded members. While quickly becoming a visible political figure for liberals, Ocasio-Cortez has had difficulty translating her success to the national scale after some of the candidates she endorsed failed to win their primaries.

Should she win the primary on Sept. 4, Pressley would be the state’s first female African-American to serve in Congress.
