The Towson University women?s lacrosse team is taking unity to a new level this season. As junior goalkeeper Mandy Corry says, there are no class boundaries.
“We have respect for each other,” Corry said. “We?re in it together.”
After starting seven freshmen last season, and with just two seniors in the prospective starting lineup this season, the Tigers are banking on a generally inexperienced lineup.
“One of our strengths is that we have a lot of our starters coming back,” said coach Missy Doherty, whose team went 7-10 in 2006. “But on the opposite side of that it?s still a very young lineup.”
That young lineup will be tested in Monday?s opener, as American visits for a 4 p.m. contest.
Towson does have star attacker Shannon Witzel returning. The senior is just 33 goals shy of a program record, and she?s happy with the experience the Tigers? freshmen got last year.
“I don?t think the fact that we had seven freshman starters hurt us last year because it helps us for this year,” Witzel said. “They do have that year under their belt, and they know what to do in close games now.”
Close games will be key, as seven of the Tigers? losses in 2006 came by one or two goals. To combat that issue, the Tigers will rely on a balanced attack this year.
“It?s going to be hard for teams to mark anyone off ? because we have so many threats in the attacking end,” junior defender Katie Mollot said.
