Sessions says he won’t vote on his nomination for attorney general

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions said he would recuse himself from casting a ballot that would determine the fate of his bid to become the next U.S. attorney general.

Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal began his questioning at Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing by asking about how Sessions would resolve potential conflicts of interest.

“Will you recuse yourself from voting on your own nomination and the nominations of other Cabinet secretaries?” the Democrat asked.

“I do not have plans to vote on my nomination,” Sessions answered at his confirmation hearing for the attorney general position. “I have not thoroughly examined all the issues, but I think there could be a conflict of interest or a violation of ethics rules and I would comply with the rules.”

Blumenthal responded that he thought it also would be a conflict of interest for Sessions to vote on the nominations of other Cabinet officials, but Sessions did not address how he intended to handle confirmation votes for those positions.
