Suspended Florida state attorney says DeSantis trying to overthrow democracy

A Florida prosecutor who was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for going against the state’s anti-abortion laws is fighting back on Twitter.

“Ron DeSantis is trying to overthrow democracy in Florida,” State Attorney Andrew Warren says in a video he posted Sunday on Twitter. “His plot to suspend me blatantly violates the most fundamental basis of our democracy: your vote.”

Warren, a Democrat, disagreed with a 15-week abortion ban in Florida and signed a letter saying he wouldn’t enforce it because it was unconstitutional. Legal challenges to the law are currently underway.

Elected as the top prosecutor in Hillborough in 2020, Warren said in media interviews that DeSantis had no right to suspend him for stating an opinion. Warren is on his second term, which expires in 2025. For his part, DeSantis claimed Warren was a “Soros-funded prosecutor” who “put himself publicly above the law.”

The spat has gone back and forth, with Warren now pinning the video to the top of his Twitter account, accusing DeSantis of “trying to overturn the results of [the] fair and free election” that put Warren in office.

“Ron DeSantis doesn’t get to handpick Florida’s state attorneys,” Warren says. “You, the people, do. We’ve all seen the consequences of politicians who think they’re above the law and can do whatever they want. That’s why DeSantis and his abuse of power must be stopped.”

In the video, which was less than 2 minutes, Warren also accuses DeSantis of trampling on freedoms of speech and making healthcare decisions, the latter comment referring to a law passed this year that criminalizes transgender healthcare for minors.
