Chicago City Council considering gun store rules

CHICAGO (AP) — A proposal by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to strictly limit where and how gun stores can operate within Chicago has been introduced in the City Council.

The measure was introduced Wednesday without discussion and referred to the council’s Public Safety Committee.

It would prohibit gun shops in 99.5 percent of Chicago. Stores would have to video record all transactions and they couldn’t sell more than one handgun to a given buyer per month.

Gun shops have been banned in Chicago.

But a federal court ruled in January that the outright ban was unconstitutional. It gave the city until July 14 to have rules in place.

Emanuel’s office says the measure is designed to prevent trafficking and illegal sales at gun stores.

The Illinois State Rifle Association calls the restrictions “unreasonable.”
