Flashback: DNC embraced Kanye West declaration to run for president

Kanye West announced in August 2015 that he decided to run for president in 2020, and the Democrats embraced the news, whether it was a legitimate announcement or not.

“As you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president,’ West said at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In response to that declaration, the Democratic National Committee sent out a cheeky tweet: “Last night @kanyewest declared his candidacy for president in 2020. Welcome to the race, Mr. West. Glad to have you.”

Fast forward to April 2018: West is tweeting about 2024 and expressing his love of President Trump. The DNC Twitter account has been conspicuously silent on the matter, and a request for comment from the DNC press office was not immediately returned.

The rapper has seen his fair share of backlash for his recent Twitter tear, but Trump himself appears to be loving it.

West also shared a photo of a signed hat which bears Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” and the Republican National Committee capitalized on it.

In response to that tweet, the RNC’s official account shared a link to the Trump campaign’s store, where people can purchase the hat.

Despite the Republican Party’s embrace, West said he doesn’t identify as a Republican, nor does he see himself as a Democrat.

“I love when people have their own ideas. You don’t have to be allowed anymore. Just be,” he said. “Love who you want to love. That’s free thought. I’m not even political. I’m not a democrat or a republican.”

West responded to his critics, saying he would never tell someone not to support 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “I don’t tell a Hillary supporter not to support Hillary,” he said. “I love Hillary too.”

He also took a shot at former President Barack Obama regarding the violence in Chicago.
