Two of President Trump’s top economic advisers are headed to Capitol Hill Tuesday to discuss tax reform with Republican leaders ahead of Wednesday’s rollout of Trump’s tax reform principles.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn will visit Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office to discuss overhauling the tax code, according to a House GOP leadership aide. The meeting also will include top Republican taxwriters, such as House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady.
Trump announced late last week that he would release a tax reform plan on Wednesday, promising that it would be a historically large tax cut.
Over the weekend, key advisers added more detail to Trump’s unexpected comments. The plan is expected to be more of a high-level statement of principles for tax reform, including an indication of target tax rates.
Interviewed on Fox News Sunday, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said that even major questions, such as whether the plan would envision adding to the federal deficit, had not been decided upon.
Mnuchin said last week that he has been in close consultation with congressional Republicans, speaking to Brady every week when Congress is in town.
He also said that the eventual White House plan would be a sweeping, comprehensive measure meant to unite congressional Republicans.
