Joe Crowley doesn’t ‘see a scenario’ where he’d challenge Nancy Pelosi for speaker if Democrats take House

Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., said Sunday it wasn’t likely he would challenge House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, but he didn’t deny that he harbors aspirations to one day be speaker should Democrats win back control of the House in November.

“I would wait and see just what happened in terms of if Nancy Pelosi decided not to run. But if Nancy Pelosi stays, I don’t see a scenario by which I would challenge her for that position,” Crowley said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

Crowley, who serves as chair of the Democratic caucus, defended Pelosi after Rep.-elect Conor Lamb won the recent special election in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District by distancing himself from her during his campaign.

He also refused to acknowledge whether Pelosi, who is a constant target of Republican attack ads, is a liability for House Democrats in the 2018 midterms.

“I think it’s more reflective of the fact Republicans are bankrupt on the ideas. They don’t have anything else to offer except to go after Nancy Pelosi to win elections,” he said.

“If they think that’s a winning strategy, they are completely mistaken and wrong,” he continued, adding that he was “confident that the American people want to bring balance back to the United States government.”
