Comey: All Americans, regardless of party, should be deeply troubled by Trump’s attacks on DOJ, FBI

Former FBI Director James Comey knocked the man who fired him in 2017 Friday and said all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, should be gravely concerned about his treatment of the Justice Department.

“The president’s attacks on the Justice Department broadly and the FBI are something that no matter what political party you’re in, you should find deeply troubling and continue to speak out about and not become numb to attacks on the rule of law,” Comey told reporters following his seven-hour private testimony before the House Oversight Committee.

Trump unexpectedly terminated the Obama nominee in May 2017 after reportedly asking Comey to let off on his investigation into then-White House national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The committee’s deep dive into Comey came out of its work to learn more after the Justice Department inspector general’s office revealed several top officials involved in an initial probe of Trump did not want him to be president.

Special counsel Robert Mueller was also appointed by DOJ officials in May 2017 to investigate possible collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign team and the Russian government.

The probe, which Trump has infamously referred to as a “witch hunt,” has lasted 19 months.
