Despite getting out to an 0-4 start in their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season, Crystal Palace USA is not about to give in.
After Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the defending USL Second Division champion Richmond Kickers on a last-minute goal, Palace management remained confident in its team’s ability.

“We played extremely well. They’re the standard in the league,” Palace general manager/co-coach Pete Medd said. “We actually took a step as a team, and we absolutely proved ourselves that we can compete in this league, if not win the league.”
After three games of defensive miscues, Palace held Richmond scoreless for 89 minutes until a cross from the right corner was headed past Palace keeper Brian Rowland. Had the team battled through the closing minute and stoppage time, it would have earned a tie ? its first points in club history ? since theUSL Second Division doesn’t employ overtime.
“The goal was certainly heartbreaking and we told them not to get used to losing, but we’re only four games in,” Medd said. “Teams can make runs, and we think we have one of those in us.”
If Palace is to make a run soon, it will come on the road. The team will visit the Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads Saturday before a May 26 rematch with Richmond. Palace hasn’t scored since the April 20 season-opening 4-1 loss at the Charlotte Eagles.
“We need to relax a little bit,” Medd said. “I think the one goal is really going to break down a lot of mental barriers. I think we’re pressing so hard. Once we get one, they’ll come in bunches.”
As one of two players over from Palace’s parent club in England, midfielder Charlie Sheringham has come off the bench in three of the team’s four games. Adept at playing the ball in the air, Sheringham should see some more time this coming weekend.
“We’re trying to find the right combination up front with the right guys to get the job done,” Medd said. “We’ve toyed with the lineup a bit. I think Charlie this weekend is going to start for us.”
