Democrats: Repealing Obamacare a ‘toxic dead-end idea’ from GOP

House Democrats are attacking the GOP’s plan this week to send President Obama a bill that repeals his signature healthcare law.

The bill would eliminate many key provisions of the law and strip taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood, which provides healthcare services and abortions.

“It may be a new year, but House Republicans are stuck in the same old toxic dead-end ideas,” Drew Hammill, a top aide to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Monday. “Working families need jobs and bigger paychecks, but Republicans are spending the first week of 2016 attacking Planned Parenthood and trying to destroy the affordable health coverage of 22 million Americans.”

The House will vote this week on a Senate-passed bill to repeal much of the law, but it has little chance of taking effect.

Obama has vowed to veto it and Congress lacks a supermajority needed to override the veto.

Republicans are promoting the legislation as a fulfillment of their years-long promise to send a repeal bill to the president.
