Louisiana police officer shot and killed over reported face mask dispute at basketball game

A Louisiana police officer was fatally shot over a reported mask dispute during a high school basketball game.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic death of TUPD Corporal Martinus Mitchum. Corporal Mitchum was a dedicated police professional who had a heart of service for the Tulane community,” Tulane University said in a statement on Tulane officer Mitchum’s death.

The suspect in the shooting, John Shallerhorn, had reportedly robbed a man sitting on the parking lot of the school by brandishing a gun before he came in contact with Mitchum on Friday.

Shallerhorn then entered the school but was stopped for not wearing a mask. An altercation then broke out, with Mitchum, who was working security at the game, attempting to escort Shallerhorn from the area.

Mitchum was then reportedly shot in the chest.
