Conservative Catholic student group protests Sebelius Georgetown visit

A Georgetown University invitation of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to speak at the school’s May 18 commencement ceremonies has a national conservative Catholic student group outraged.

The Cardinal Newman Society is calling the Jesuit university to immediately withdraw its invitation of Sebelius, who is Catholic, on account of the HHS contraceptive and abortifacient mandate and her abortion stance.

Reilly echoes the sentiments of countless Catholic bishops in suggesting that the mandate compromises the First Amendment’s protection of the free exercise of religion.

“Georgetown insults all Americans by this honor.  The selection is especially insulting to faithful Catholics and their bishops, who are engaged in the fight for religious liberty and against abortion,” Cardinal Newman Society President Patrick J. Reilly writes in a letter to Georgetown President John J DeGioia. “The contrast is stark between Georgetown University and those faithful Catholic colleges and universities that have stood for faith and freedom.”

The group has posted a petition at Georgetownscandal.com asking faithful Catholics to petition Georgetown to disinvite. Sebelius.

The conservative Catholic newspaper The National Catholic Register chimed in saying,” We cannot allow this to happen or we cannot allow Georgetown to carry the name Catholic.”
