House Democrats: Trump’s speech like ‘The Hunger Games’

Congressional Democrats appear to still be having a hard time dealing with the reality that Donald Trump is president, and some described Tuesday night’s speech as “surreal” or “like The Hunger Games.”

The Huffington Post spoke to some Democratic lawmakers Tuesday following Trump’s speech and many of them were uniform in their distaste for Trump’s speech and the atmosphere surrounding his presidency.

“To me, it actually felt a little bit like The Hunger Games at points. There was something kind of dystopian, science fiction about the experience,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. “I looked up and I saw Newt Gingrich and suddenly I felt that I was transported to a different world.”

New York Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said Trump is “masquerading” as president.

“It was a surreal experience,” he said. “We have a reality show host in the White House masquerading as the president of the United States of America and half the country is still in complete shock.”

According to the report, several Democrats liked the portion of Trump’s speech calling for paid family leave but there wasn’t much else they took away from it. They pointed to a lack of specifics as one of their big problems with the speech.

The House Democrats indicated they’re not going to be shy about resisting Trump’s agenda at every turn.

“This president gives me a raison d’etre to wake up every morning and say, ‘What has he said today and how can I go after him?'” New York Rep. Joe Crowley said. “I’ve got news for him this is not reality TV, this is the real deal.”
