Second House panel approves Obamacare replacement

A second House committee has approved an Obamacare replacement bill, putting the controversial measure over a first major hurdle as Republican leaders seek to get it passed by Congress.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the measure 31-23 down partisan lines Thursday afternoon, ending a 27-hour hearing in which Democrats unsuccessfully pushed for more than a dozen amendments and slammed the bill for pulling back on major parts of the Affordable Care Act.

The bill’s success is still far from certain, as conservatives in the House and Senate are insisting that a repeal bill should discard much more of the law, but its passage through two major House committees is a big step forward for the legislation backed by President Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan.
