The financial award — designed to encourage competitive research— will offer learning opportunities for college faculty, college students and K-12 students throughout the state and aims to educate Oklahomans about the consequences of regional environmental change.

The NSF award also includes researchers from the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation.

The foundation is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science and improve national health and prosperity, among other goals.

Its 2012 budget was around $7 billion.
