“The Colbert Report” bid farewell in only the most fitting of ways Thursday: a medley of really famous people singing a World War II-era song.
Colbert was joined by Jon Stewart and then a swelling group of media and entertainment celebs for a rendition of “We’ll Meet Again,” a cheery British tune that has made appearances in film and television throughout the years. At no point has a larger and more miscellaneous group sung it than the one present with Colbert Thursday, though, a crowd that featured the likes of music stars (Michael Stipe and Jeff Tweedy), media celebrities (David Gregory and Katie Couric), movie stars (James Franco, Jeff Daniels, and Patrick), Sesame Street characters (Big Bird and Cookie Monster), and others, including a particular guest at the end that just simply trumps them all.
