Former Clinton advisor and current CNN commentator Paul Begala said any of the Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 could murder his dog Gus and he’d still vote for them over President Trump.
“I’m a JFK Democrat. I’ll pay any price, bear any burden, oppose any foe to ensure the defeat of Donald J. Trump,” Begala said Monday on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time.” “You can be Medicare for all or not … you could shoot my dog and if I think you can beat Trump I’mma be for ya.”
Begala’s comment came during a discussion with host Chris Cuomo about an ongoing debate national Democrats are having about what party voters care most about when selecting a nominee.
Some more progressive members of the electorate say they are yearning for a candidate who represents their views accurately on issues like Medicare, education reform, and gun rights.
Still, a new poll released Tuesday showed 92% of Democrats “say it is either extremely or very important that the party’s nominee has a good chance of defeating Trump.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden is seen as the most mainstream option for Democrats in a field of nearly two dozen candidates.
In the first poll conducted after Biden kicked off his campaign with a rally in Pittsburgh Monday, Biden holds a commanding lead.
Biden’s blue-collar roots and centrist voting record over nearly 50 years in public service has many political commentators like Begala labeling him the biggest threat to Trump in 2020.
Trump campaign staffers have maintained for months that they are “not worried” about any of the 2020 Democrats running for president, including Biden.
Trump famously once said he could shoot someone in the middle of New York City’s Fifth Avenue and people would still vote for him.
After his CNN appearance, Begala took to Twitter to break it to Gus that he was just “kidding.”
This is Gus. He’s a good boy. And a good Democrat. I was only kidding on @CuomoPrimeTime, Gus! pic.twitter.com/VJLnjV146j
