Senior Players Championship set to tee off

The Champion?s Tour is ready to put on a show for the Baltimore area.

The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, the fifth and final major of the season, will be held Thursday through Sunday at Baltimore Country Club?s East Course. A field of 78 of the top golfers who are at least 50 years old will hit the links and compete for a purse of about $2.6 million.

“Baltimore is such a great area and I think people are going to see that it?s a perfect time of the year to show the area off, too,” Michael Stott, general manager of the Baltimore Country Club said. “Early fall is wonderful.”

More than 1,000 club members, Constellation Energy employees and local golf enthusiasts have volunteered to assist the Baltimore Country Club?s 300 employees to help run the tournament.

The nationally televised tournament ? on The Golf Channel and NBC ? was held in Dearborn, Mich., last fall. Constellation Energy, which was the title sponsor of the Constellation Energy Classic at Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley the past four years, will be the Senior Players Championship title sponsor through 2011.

The tournament, which consists of four rounds over days, will begin Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m.

“Baltimore is always a good place to play,” said Don Pooley, currently 36th on the tour?s money list with more than $456,000. “It?s a special place. I have had success there which makes it fun and gives me a lot of positive thoughts.”

The tournament is also expected to generate $35 million for the local economy.

“This prestigious golf tournament starts a new tradition in Baltimore County,” David S. Iannucci, executive director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, said. “A high profile event such as this showcases the tremendous quality of life here in Baltimore County and the region.”
