HOUSTON (AP) — A deputy has fatally shot a Houston-area bank robbery suspect who refused to drop his gun and then pointed the weapon at officers.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday afternoon. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Deputies responded to a report of an aggravated robbery at a Woodforest Bank branch. Investigators say the armed suspect was located at another location.

Sheriff’s spokesman Thomas Gilliland says negotiators tried to get the man to surrender, but he became more belligerent and agitated. The suspect fired several shots into the ground before pointing the gun at officers. A deputy opened fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave during a review of the incident.
