Wall Street Journal to Trump: Show more ‘loyalty and respect’ to appointees

The right-leaning Wall Street Journal editorial board said President Trump should treat his White House staff and the people he appoints to his Cabinet with more respect.

The Journal wrote Tuesday night that outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson “deserved better” than the way he was fired and that Trump should be more professional going forward. Reports said he learned of it through Trump’s Twitter feed.

“Mr. Trump has run through a spate of advisers in recent weeks, and a personnel reset isn’t surprising for someone so new to governing,” the paper said. “But Mr. Trump should be careful to treat his colleagues better than he so often does, lest he drive away first-class talent. He needs to get the team he wants and show them the same loyalty and respect he demands from them.”

Tillerson’s coming departure was announced early on Tuesday, and Trump has said he would nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to take his place.

The Journal said Pompeo appears to be a “trade up” from Tillerson.
