Luis Gutierrez: Be ready to storm Washington if Trump fires Russia investigators

Retiring Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said Wednesday that people who oppose President Trump must be ready to “quickly” descend on Washington if the “tyrant” in the Oval Office attempts to fire people investigating his supposed ties to Russia.

“We have to be ready to come to Washington, quickly, massively, energetically, in huge numbers when the shoe drops. We have to answer the call to defend the country we all love and we must be united,” Gutierrez said on the House floor Wednesday morning.

“The president reiterated his threats to subvert justice by firing key Justice officials this week, so I feel obligated to reiterate my commitment to defend the Constitution and the rule of law as a citizen,” he added. “We must be ready to stand up again and again and answer the call when our nation is under attack and threatened by a tyrant.”

Wednesday morning, Trump called out Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for being “conflicted,” which many saw as a sign that he might be about to fire Rosenstein or special counsel Robert Mueller.

“Much of the bad blood with Russia is caused by the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation, headed up by the all Democrat loyalists, or people that worked for Obama. Mueller is most conflicted of all (except Rosenstein who signed FISA & Comey letter). No Collusion, so they go crazy!” Trump tweeted.

Trump’s statement came less than 24 hours after the FBI aided the office and hotel room of his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

“No Collusion or Obstruction (other than I fight back), so now they do the Unthinkable, and RAID a lawyers office for information! BAD!” Trump tweeted Tuesday evening.

Gutierrez said Trump’s responses to recent events have been “disgraceful” and vowed to hold the administration accountable for alleged misdoings.

“We cannot rely on Republicans to defend Democracy and our system of government as long as they find political and personal advantage in walking lock-step with the President or they tremble in fear of what he would tweet if they stepped out-of-line,” he said. “Together, the American people can fight petty disregard for law and order, the data-driven divisiveness and the media manipulation to defend the country we love. To do so, we must be ready and we must be together.”
